The Sisterhood was on Connections Radio last Saturday to talk about municipal election results! Listen to the recap and learn how to hold our elected officials accountable and how to mobilize our communities to make our city a safe place for everyone.

They talked about the Muslim Sheroes of Minnesota project, the power of storytelling, and the importance of authentic, positive representation.

This year, as we watch the election cycle unfold, we covered topics from legislative session to census to Islamophobia in the presidential race. Asma Mohammed and Aaisha Abdullahi answered questions about Election Day.
With the school year starting in the midst of a global pandemic, along with local elections appearing on the ballot in a couple months, we brought on school board candidate and Shura Council member Farheen Hassan to discuss the school board election process and current challenges in the education system.
Our Advocacy Director Asma Mohammed and Councilwoman Nadia Mohamed talked about the importance of the primaries during this show now that we’re getting closer to elections.
Earlier this week, George Floyd was murdered by four Minneapolis police offers. We used our May show to share some calls to action as the uprising in response to police brutality and violence against Black communities continues. In recent weeks, we have heard stories of racism and violent acts of bigotry against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders from within the state and across the country that have our community members worried about the safety of themselves and their families. We discussed coronavirus racism and the various ways Asian Americans have been and continue to be discriminated against when our nation’s leaders irresponsibly label a disease to a whole community.
The 2020 Census is kicking off this month with invitations mailed to every household in the country. To make sure that our Sisterhood is ready to be counted, we talked through census basics with Civic Engagement Coordinator Malak Shahin.
During our first show of 2020, we discussed civic engagement, shared how to caucus and become a delegate, and answered your questions about this stage of the election process. We were joined by Shura Council Member Maria Nezami, who organizes and advocates for our state’s political process with Faith in MN.
On October 19th, we were joined by our Shero Nadia Mohamed, candidate for St. Louis Park City Council. Listen to Nadia talk about her civic engagement journey and her commitment to making sure that her community is represented and reflected in its local government.
On May 23rd, we were joined by Hibah Hassan to talk about civic engagement and share legislative updates on the bills that we advocated for.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and on the 15th we were joined by Alla Hassan of Ramsey County SOS Sexual Violence Services. Listen and learn how to support survivors and prevent sexual violence, and hear from Alla and Asma about a bill to lift the statute of limitations on reporting sexual assault.
On February 16, we were joined by Sakinah Mujahid, Executive Director of Sisters Need A Place. SNAP was formed by a group of Muslim women to meet the economic and spiritual needs of women, and their mission is to spiritually uplift our community and work towards a greater good.
